What Is Melasma? Causes of Pigmentation

Blue or grey-brown patches usually found on the face are commonly known as melasma, a form of pigmentation. Triggered by hormonal release before and after pregnancy, melasma is one of the most common worries of expecting or new mothers. Triggered by hormones post delivery or contraceptive pills, here are a few ways to tackle melasma.

  1. In order to avoid it, be regular with your sunscreen. Be vigilant with a sunblock (a physical sunscreen with a whitish appearance) or a chemical sunscreen with mexoryl. Apply it 30 minutes prior to stepping out in the sun.
  2. When stepping out, make sure you wear sunglasses, dark clothing or a hat. It goes a long way.
  3. Use Vitamin C based lotions and creams to stimulate collagen every now and then. Follow it up with sunscreen.
  4. If your skin is prone to acne, make most of Clindamycin, recommended by dermatologists.
  5. Check with your dermatologist for mild peels that are safe to avoid sun spots during pregnancy.

Treatments For Pigmentation

1. Visit your dermatologist for a consult. She may prescribe OTC hydroquinone in liquid, cream or gel format.

2. Topical creams with azelaic acid or kojic acid to help lighten melasma. Please take the help of an expert instead of diagnosing yourself.

3. Besides these, microdermabrasion, peels, light and laser therapy have been proven to bring in good results. A combination of long pulse, Q-Switched, PICO laser radiation target melanin. There are considerably noticeable differences in 2-6 sessions.
