Five Most Potent Active Ingredients for Ageing Skin

Discover the best ingredients that can add a youthful glow to your ageing skin

The anti-ageing industry has a global value of $58.5 billion in 2020. This figure is set to increase by seven percent in the next five years. In recent years, dermatologists have discovered active ingredients that firm up ageing skin and infuse it with brightness. Here are five potent active ingredients that work well for ageing skin.

  1. Retinol

If there is one ingredient that all dermatologists recommend then it is retinol. This form of vitamin A is like an elixir for ageing skin as it effectively speeds up cell turnover rate and increases collagen production, which reduces fine lines and wrinkles. The best time to use retinol is at night and it should be used in the form of an overnight cream or serum so that your skin has ample time to soak it in without disturbances. You should not use retinol products during the day because it has high photosensitivity and can be highly reactive when it comes in contact with UV rays. Over the years, many formations of retinol have been introduced to the market. Two of the popular ones are retinaldehyde (also known as retinal) and more recently, bakuchiol (known as natural retinol). Both of these variations cause less irritation and allergic reactions than pure retinol.

  1. Vitamin C

In recent years the skincare industry has realised the wonderful benefits of vitamin C. Research has shown that vitamin C mitigates melanin production, this diminishes hyperpigmentation and you end up getting an even skin tone. Additionally, since vitamin C is packed with antioxidants, it offers protection against free radicals that come from UV rays and pollution. Experts suggest that one should use vitamin C in the morning. It should be applied after cleansing and before wearing sunscreen. The best way to use Vitamin C is in the form of a serum. To maximise its impact, pair it with other antioxidants like ferulic acid or hyaluronic acid. However, do not pair vitamin C with niacinamide or retinol as this combination can disrupt your skin’s pH level.

  1. Salicylic Acid

The name salicylic acid always reminds one of the anti-acne treatments. However, it is a lesser-known fact that salicylic acid is also used widely to slow down ageing. Since salicylic acid is a keratin-dissolving acid it prevents clogging of pores and acts as a scrub by shredding the dead cells. The exfoliating properties of salicylic acid are helpful in keeping acne and wrinkles at bay. Include a cream-based salicylic acid cleanser into your routine daily or three times a week.

  1. Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a vitamin B compound that regulates oil secretion and has antibacterial properties. It is known for soothing inflammation and preventing congestion. Another great quality of niacinamide is that it strengthens the skin barrier and subsequently stops the trans-epidermal water loss. This way your skin will remain hydrated by using niacinamide. Niacinamide naturally increases ceramide production that locks moisture within your cells. This ingredient improves the cell turnover rate and heightens microcirculation that gives you a glowing appearance. Niacinamide should be used twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. It is best used in the form of moisturisers and serums for optimum absorption. Unlike most active ingredients, niacinamide suits all types of skin and does not cause allergic reactions.

  1. Hyaluronic Acid

The water-retaining properties of hyaluronic acid help you defer ageing. As you start growing old, your skin starts losing its water holding capacity and as a result, it becomes dry. Studies have clearly demonstrated a visible benefit in wrinkle reduction (up to 40%), skin hydration (up to 96%), and an increase in skin firmness (up to 55%) after using hyaluronic acid for eight weeks. You can use hyaluronic acid any time of the day and it is compatible with all skin types, including sensitive skin.
